The Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection in Fiji has issued a strong reminder about the illegality of forcing or encouraging children to beg. The ministry has highlighted the grave risks associated with child begging, which not only subjects children to exploitation, abuse, and harm but also denies them a safe and nurturing environment crucial for their development.
Minister Sashi Kiran emphasized the critical role of parents and guardians, urging them to prioritize the welfare and safety of their children. She stated, “Encouraging or forcing children to beg violates their rights and contravenes national laws designed to protect them.” The repercussions for those facilitating this unlawful practice can include serious legal consequences.
The ministry, alongside law enforcement, has committed to prosecuting offenders in order to protect children’s well-being. Citizens are encouraged to report any cases of child begging by contacting the Child Helpline at 1325.
In her remarks, Ms. Kiran called on everyone to work together to foster a safer and more compassionate society, where all children can enjoy a joyful and secure holiday season. As the new year unfolds, the ministry is also appealing to stakeholders and community members to collaboratively enhance safety for families and children, wishing everyone a blessed year ahead filled with kindness and goodwill.
This initiative points to a positive step towards creating a society where the welfare of children is a shared responsibility, enhancing the community’s compassion and protective measures against exploitation.
