The Fijian Media Association (FMA) has urged public officials to honor media freedom and foster democratic dialogue on national issues. This call comes in response to a recent press release from FICAC that stressed the importance of respecting the Commission of Inquiry’s processes.
The FMA views FICAC’s message as an infringement on the essential rights of the media and the public’s entitlement to information and the ability to question procedural integrity. They argue that any efforts to stifle public discourse and criticism undermine the values of transparency and accountability that are vital to democracy.
Furthermore, the FMA highlighted that a subsequent statement from Justice David Ashton-Lewis, who leads the Commission of Inquiry, reflects a commitment to transparency and the principles of natural justice. The FMA remains steadfast in its belief that press freedom is a fundamental right and asserts that, despite facing various challenges, it will continue to act as a watchdog against abuses of power and report on matters of national significance.
The importance of media freedom and public discourse cannot be overstated, especially in democratic societies. Conversations around national issues should be promoted, as they empower citizens and hold authorities accountable. The FMA’s commitment to safeguarding these principles is a positive step toward fostering a culture of openness and accountability in Fiji.
