Three prominent social media influencers from Fiji have been chosen to participate in the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention in Odisha, India. The High Commission of India in Suva held a pre-departure briefing today for the selected influencers: Shania Singh, Shaheel Shermont Flair, and Ashwani Vasist Deo.

Shania Singh, a former television personality, has made a name for herself as a popular content creator. Shaheel Shermont Flair is particularly known for his substantial TikTok following, with his content being shared by notable celebrities, including those from Bollywood. Ashwani Vasist Deo has also garnered widespread attention on TikTok, contributing to the vibrant digital landscape.

The influencers will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in India’s rich heritage, culture, and picturesque landscapes while attending the convention scheduled for January 8-10 in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is celebrated annually on January 9 to honor the contributions of the Overseas Indian community to the nation’s development. This date holds historical significance, as it marks the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa in 1915, a pivotal moment that ignited India’s freedom struggle and transformed the lives of millions.

Since 2015, the PBD Convention has shifted to a biennial format, featuring themed conferences in the interim years that bring together diaspora experts, policymakers, and stakeholders. These gatherings facilitate meaningful engagement between the Indian government and the overseas Indian community, promoting mutually beneficial initiatives. Additionally, they offer networking opportunities for members of the global Indian diaspora, allowing them to exchange expertise and experiences across various sectors.

By participating in this influential event, the Fijian influencers not only get a chance to broaden their horizons but also contribute to fostering connections between India and the global Indian community. This presents an encouraging prospect for promoting cultural exchange and collaboration, highlighting the role of social media influencers in bridging diverse cultures and communities.
