Three vibrant social media influencers from Fiji have been chosen to represent their country at the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention in Odisha. A pre-departure briefing was held by senior officials of the High Commission of India in Suva for the selected influencers: Shania Singh, Shaheel Shermont Flair, and Ashwani Vasist Deo.
Shania Singh, a former television personality turned popular content creator, will be joined by Shaheel Shermont Flair, who boasts a substantial TikTok following, with many prominent celebrities, including stars from Bollywood, sharing his videos. Ashwani Vasist Deo is also known for his engaging content on TikTok, which has gained traction across social media platforms.
The influencers will immerse themselves in India’s rich heritage, vibrant culture, and picturesque landscapes during the convention scheduled from January 8 to 10 in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is celebrated annually on January 9 to honor the contributions of the Overseas Indian community to India’s development. This date marks the return of Mahatma Gandhi to India from South Africa in 1915, a pivotal moment that set the stage for India’s freedom struggle.
Since its inception in 2003, the PBD has evolved to take place every two years, with themed conferences held in between, gathering experts, policymakers, and diaspora members to forge beneficial partnerships. These conventions provide invaluable opportunities for the Indian diaspora to connect with their roots and collaborate with government and community members, fostering mutual growth and understanding.
Overall, the participation of these Fijian influencers not only highlights the global Indian community’s influence but also the growing recognition of cultural exchange and collaboration. Their journey serves as a reminder of the enduring connections that bind the diaspora with their homeland, paving the way for future engagements that celebrate cultural diversity and heritage.
