Three influential social media figures from Fiji have been chosen to represent their country at the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention in Odisha, India. The Fiji High Commission’s senior officials in Suva organized a pre-departure briefing for the selected influencers: Shania Singh, Shaheel Shermont Flair, and Ashwani Vasist Deo.
Shania Singh, a former television personality, has gained popularity as a content creator, while Shaheel Shermont Flair boasts a significant following on TikTok, where many prominent celebrities, including Bollywood stars, share his videos. Ashwani Vasist Deo has also made waves on TikTok with content that resonates widely among viewers.
The trio is eager to immerse themselves in India’s diverse heritage, culture, and natural beauty during the convention, which will take place from January 8 to 10 in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha.
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is an annual event celebrated on January 9 since 2003 to acknowledge the contributions of the overseas Indian community to the development of India. This date is significant as it marks the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to India in 1915, a pivotal moment that set the stage for India’s freedom struggle.
Since its inception, the format of PBD has evolved to be held every two years, featuring theme-based conferences that allow overseas diaspora experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions. These conventions not only facilitate interactions between the Indian government and its diaspora but also foster networking opportunities among overseas Indians, encouraging the sharing of insights and experiences across various fields.
