Three vibrant social media influencers from Fiji have been chosen to participate in the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention, set to take place in Odisha. A pre-departure briefing was organized today by senior officials from the High Commission of India in Suva for the influencers: Shania Singh, Shaheel Shermont Flair, and Ashwani Vasist Deo.

Shania Singh, known for her previous stint in television, has made a name for herself as a popular content creator. Shaheel Shermont Flair boasts a considerable following on TikTok, with his videos being shared by numerous celebrities, including Bollywood stars. Likewise, Ashwani’s TikTok content has gained significant traction and visibility.

The influencers will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in India’s rich culture, heritage, and beautiful landscapes while attending the convention, which runs from January 8-10 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is commemorated annually on January 9, having started in 2003, to honor the contributions of the Overseas Indian community to India’s development. The date was selected to mark the return of Mahatma Gandhi to India from South Africa on January 9, 1915, a pivotal moment that kick-started India’s freedom struggle.

Since its inception, the format of PBD has evolved, now occurring every two years, with thematic conferences held in between that engage experts, policymakers, and members of the diaspora. These conventions serve as a vital platform for overseas Indians to connect with the Indian government and share experiences, fostering partnerships that benefit both communities.

This event represents a unique opportunity for Fijian influencers to build connections and enhance cultural exchange between India and Fiji, showcasing the power of social media in bridging geographical divides.

In summary, the inclusion of these influencers not only highlights the talent present in Fiji but also emphasizes the growing importance of global networking among the Indian diaspora, paving the way for fruitful collaborations and cultural understanding.
