Three prominent Fijian social media influencers have been chosen to represent their country at the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention in Odisha, highlighting a cultural collaboration between India and Fiji. The High Commission of India in Suva organized a pre-departure briefing for the trio: Shania Singh, a former television personality turned popular content creator; Shaheel Shermont Flair, a TikTok sensation with a considerable following and shares from numerous Bollywood celebrities; and Ashwani Vasist Deo, another TikTok influencer whose content has gained widespread attention.
The influencers are excited to immerse themselves in India’s rich heritage and scenic beauty while attending the event from January 8 to 10 in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) celebrates the importance of the Overseas Indian community in India’s development and occurs annually on January 9, commemorating the return of Mahatma Gandhi to India from South Africa in 1915—an event that ignited the freedom struggle and profoundly improved the lives of Indians.
The convention has evolved since its inception in 2003, being held every two years, with theme-based conferences in between that foster engagement among diaspora experts, policy makers, and stakeholders. This platform encourages the overseas Indian community to collaborate with the Indian government, fostering mutually beneficial initiatives and facilitating important networking opportunities.
Overall, this convention represents not just a celebration of cultural ties, but also an opportunity for Fijian influencers to build bridges and strengthen relationships that span across continents. It is a promising highlight of collaboration and interaction among the global Indian diaspora.
