Three vibrant Fijian social media influencers have been chosen to represent their country at the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention in Odisha, India. Senior officials from the High Commission of India in Suva conducted a pre-departure briefing today for the influencers: Shania Singh, Shaheel Shermont Flair, and Ashwani Vasist Deo.
Shania Singh, a recognized former television personality, has garnered a significant following as a content creator. Shaheel Shermont Flair is particularly popular on TikTok, where his videos have been shared by numerous celebrities, including renowned figures from Bollywood. Similarly, Ashwani has also gained considerable traction on TikTok, with his content reaching wide audiences.
The influencers are excited to delve into India’s rich heritage, diverse culture, and stunning landscapes while attending the convention, which is scheduled to take place from January 8 to 10 in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha.
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is an annual celebration held on January 9 since 2003 to recognize the contributions of the Overseas Indian community towards India’s development. This date was selected as it marks the return of Mahatma Gandhi to India from South Africa in 1915—a pivotal moment that inspired the Indian freedom struggle and significantly impacted the lives of countless Indians.
Since 2015, the PBD format has been adjusted to occur every two years, with the introduction of theme-based conferences in the interim. These gatherings aim to foster collaboration between the overseas Indian community and the Indian government, facilitating mutually beneficial activities and networking opportunities. Additionally, they provide a platform for the diaspora to share their diverse experiences across various sectors.
In essence, this initiative not only highlights the cultural ties that unite Indians worldwide but also serves as a beacon of hope for fostering collaboration and growth among the global Indian diaspora.
The participation of these influencers represents a significant cultural exchange and acts as a bridge for future engagement between Fiji and India, showcasing the vibrant connections that nourish both communities.
