In the vibrant tourism sector, where each interaction can shape a visitor’s experience, a deep dedication to service emerges as a cornerstone of success. At Tokoriki Island Resort in the stunning Mamanuca archipelago in Fiji, a remarkable figure stands out: Penioni Fakauliafa, a 74-year-old veteran of the hospitality industry, recently honored with the “Best Director of Operations” award at the prestigious Haute Grandeur Global Awards 2024.

Originally from Sawana in Vanuabalavu, where the esteemed Tongan chief Ma’afu once settled, Mr. Fakauliafa’s journey began when he moved to Suva at the age of ten. Raised by his uncle, the late statesman Sailosi Kepa, he pursued his education in various schools before embarking on his professional career. He first joined the workforce in 1970 at the Suva wharf and later transitioned to the hospitality industry in 1975 at the Regent of Fiji, the first hotel in Denarau. His initial role as a porter sparked a lifelong passion for hospitality, rooted in meaningful interactions with visitors.

Mr. Fakauliafa has climbed through the ranks, evolving from porter to duty manager without ever losing sight of the significance of service. Today, he expresses not only personal fulfilment through his work but also a broader commitment to his community and country, recognizing tourism’s crucial role in the Fijian economy. Rising at 3 AM daily, he approaches his responsibilities with a dedication to excellence, viewing hospitality as a divine gift that he respects and cherishes.

While he acknowledges the shifts in the industry, including a decline in the authentic warmth that once defined Fijian hospitality, his philosophy remains centered on the power of genuine human connection. He believes tourists seek the cultural richness and warmth of Fijian life, beyond just luxurious accommodations and scenic beaches. To him, embedding love and care into every task is essential, as is fostering a positive workplace culture where team members feel valued.

Mr. Fakauliafa has become a beloved mentor at Tokoriki Island Resort, affectionately known as “Tua,” meaning “grandfather.” His leadership approach emphasizes trust and camaraderie, and he participates actively in all aspects of resort operations, showing that no job is beneath him. Despite personal tragedies, including the loss of his wife during the COVID-19 pandemic, he remains resilient, drawing strength from his faith and the support of his children.

Looking to the future, Mr. Fakauliafa envisions his role as a legacy, inspiring others to embrace the ethos of dedication and passion in their work. He firmly believes that if every individual commits wholeheartedly, Fiji can thrive even more. His journey exemplifies how dedication and genuine efforts to bring joy to others can uplift not just individual lives but also entire communities, reinforcing the spirit of Fijian hospitality.

Mr. Fakauliafa’s story serves as an inspiring reminder of the profound impact of commitment and passion in shaping a brighter future for the tourism industry and beyond.
