Fijian Heroism: A Legacy of Courage in Combat

The prestigious Legion of Honour is the highest French order of merit, acknowledging exceptional military and civilian achievements. Established on May 19, 1802, by Napoleon Bonaparte, it was conceived to honor valor and exceptional service, superseding previous royal honors abolished in 1791.

This esteemed decoration is divided into five distinct classes: Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, and Knight. Among the select few honored globally are three courageous Fijian soldiers who received the Knight class, akin to the British Commonwealth’s Victoria Cross.

One remarkable recipient was the late Private (Pte) James Sukera from Wailailai, Ovalau. A close friend, Kulitapa Powell, remembered him fondly, reflecting on their friendship that began when Sukera joined the military in 1985. Sukera passed away on November 28, 2024, but his legacy lives on in Levuka.

Pte Sukera displayed extraordinary heroism on August 12, 1986, during a critical incident in Lebanon. A local ambulance was tasked with evacuating three gravely injured French soldiers from the French battalion’s operations. Amid escalating violence following the assassination of two local leaders, armed militants intercepted the ambulance, aiming to capture or harm the casualties.

As dangerous circumstances unfolded, Sukera bravely emerged from his position to rescue a wounded French soldier, with the assistance of his fellow soldiers, Corporal Maciu Davobalavu and Private Luke Vukivuki. Davobalavu provided cover fire, ensuring that Sukera and the injured soldier were safely evacuated.

Pte Sukera’s funeral took place on December 3, 2024, yet the valor displayed by him and his comrades—who risked their lives to protect their allies and uphold their mission—remains a testament to the indomitable spirit of Fijian warriors. Their exemplary acts earned them France’s highest honor, symbolizing courage, unity, and sacrifice.

This story serves as an inspiring reminder of the bravery and resilience found in humanity, especially in times of dire conflict. The heroism of these soldiers not only impacted those they helped but also continues to resonate within their community and beyond. Their legacy inspires hope, illustrating the potential for courage in the face of adversity.
