The Legion of Honour, the premier French order of merit, recognizes outstanding contributions in both military and civilian realms. Established by Napoleon Bonaparte on May 19, 1802, it aimed to honor acts of bravery and service after the abolition of previous royal orders in 1791. Recipients of this esteemed decoration also gain membership in the Order of Merit, akin to knighthoods in the British Commonwealth.
This prestigious order is categorized into five distinct classes: Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, and Knight. A noteworthy distinction is that three courageous Fijian soldiers have received the Knight class, comparable to the British Commonwealth’s Victoria Cross. One notable recipient was the late Private James Sukera from Wailailai, Ovalau.
Sukera, who joined the Fijian military in the mid-1980s, is remembered fondly by his longtime friend Kulitapa Powell. Unfortunately, Private Sukera passed away on November 28, 2024, yet his legacy lives on, particularly within the community of Levuka.
His defining moment of valor came on August 12, 1986, during a tumultuous operation in Lebanon. As armed elements besieged French positions following the death of local leaders, an ambulance evacuating three critically injured French soldiers was intercepted. When the situation escalated, Sukera bravely emerged from his defense position to assist in the rescue.
Along with fellow soldiers Corporal Maciu Davobalavu and Private Luke Vukivuki, Sukera played a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of the wounded soldier amidst heavy enemy fire. Together, they thwarted the attackers, ultimately earning France’s highest honor for their actions that day.
Pte Sukera’s funeral took place on December 3, 2024, marking the farewell to a man whose courage and determination reflect the fighting spirit of the Fijian people. His story, alongside those of his comrades, serves as an inspiring testament to selflessness and bravery in the defense of peace.
This narrative reminds us of the bravery individuals can exhibit in the face of danger, and their stories continue to inspire future generations. It is a poignant reminder that acts of heroism, no matter where they occur, can have a profound impact on history and serve as a beacon of hope for others.
