Fijian Grad Inspires Change: Meet the Best Disciplined Corrections Officer

Inia Yavala, a 23-year-old from Namuka, Lau, has proudly graduated as a Fijian Corrections Service (FCS) officer and earned the accolade of Best Disciplined Recruit during the recent ceremony. Yavala is determined to serve with integrity and positively influence his community. His journey to this achievement began after his secondary education at an all-boys’ school, followed by 14 weeks of rigorous training to join the corrections service.

Yavala reflected on the challenges he encountered, including maintaining physical fitness and adhering to strict discipline. He expressed gratitude for the unwavering support from his family and fellow trainees throughout this journey. “It wasn’t easy at first,” he remarked, “but I kept my focus, knowing we had to perform.”

Among a cohort of 64 recruits, Yavala highlighted the collective strong work ethic displayed during their training. He underscored the significance of rehabilitation in the corrections field and stated that a career as a corrections officer provides a valuable opportunity to enhance public safety and assist in the rehabilitation of offenders. “It can be a fulfilling job for those who want to make a positive difference in society,” he noted, emphasizing the pride that comes from community service.

This graduation closely aligns with the FCS’s broader initiatives aimed at fostering professionalism and integrity within the corrections environment, reinforcing a commitment to community rehabilitation. FCS Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa recognized that the dedication exhibited by new officers like Yavala foreshadows a hopeful future for corrections in Fiji, ensuring improvements in service standards and practices.

The developments within the Fiji Corrections Service reflect a forward-thinking approach focused on skill enhancement, community service, and a steadfast commitment to integrity. This marks a promising step toward positive change in the corrections landscape, offering hope for both the officers and the communities they serve.
