Fijians may soon have the opportunity to serve in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) as discussions unfold between the two nations about formalizing an agreement. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka expressed his openness to such an arrangement, particularly in light of Australia’s significant shortfall of approximately 5,000 military personnel.

During a speech at the National Press Club in Canberra, Rabuka emphasized that Fiji is prepared to contribute to Australia’s defence needs. He reassured that legislation passed under his administration ensures that Fijians serving abroad will retain their right to return home. “I would like to see it happen; whether Australia does it or not depends on your own policies, we will not push it,” he stated, humorouslyadding that Australia could consider enlisting “the whole lot, 5000.”

Rabuka highlighted Fiji’s history of contributing to Australia’s workforce through initiatives like the Pacific Labour Scheme and noted that enlisting Fijians would follow this tradition, potentially benefiting both nations. He expressed hope that this partnership could create paths for returning Fijian veterans to reintegrate and contribute to their homeland with the pensions they earned during their service.

In addition, Rabuka acknowledged Australia’s continuous support for Fiji, which includes funding for the redevelopment of CWM Hospital and rejuvenating over 50 schools that were damaged in recent cyclones. This ongoing collaboration not only aims to enhance Fiji’s defence capabilities but also reflects a positive trajectory in regional cooperation and stability.

The proposed initiative reflects a broader strategy to strengthen military ties and operational effectiveness between Fiji and Australia, mirroring recent advancements in their defence partnerships. This collaboration enhances Fiji’s role in addressing common security challenges, ultimately fostering regional peace and prosperity.

As the discussion progresses, it paints a hopeful picture for the future, emphasizing mutual support and cooperation in the Pacific. Enhanced recruitment would not only address immediate personnel shortages in the ADF but also allow Fijians to further enrich their military experience and skills, benefiting both the individuals and their communities back home.
