A food festival aimed at promoting local businesses is currently underway in Suva this week. Nemani Saronicava, the leader of the food vendor initiative, highlighted the participation of vendors from Namacu, Koro, and Lomaiviti.

The festival, which has experienced a resurgence after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, provides an opportunity for business owners to utilize the land for their businesses. Saronicava noted that for the past five years, the business has been thriving under the name Crave Crazy Fijian Delicacy, boasting a strong presence in Suva’s main market.

The initiative has garnered support from community members who have returned to assist their families, contributing to a robust recovery. He emphasized that food prices are currently reasonable, situated within a range of $5 to $20, making them accessible to both residents and local businesses.

The vendors are showcasing a variety of traditional Fijian dishes, with menu items including Kokoda, vuaka, lovo, tofu, and a selection of other delicacies for customers to enjoy.

Arieta Ravula, one of the selected vendors from the Fiji Arts Council, expressed optimism about the business’s growth. At 61 years of age and hailing from Namata, Bau, Tailevu, Ravula has been selling products for three years and is self-assured about the future of her business endeavors. She operates alongside a cousin from the same village.

She noted that they have not yet generated substantial profit from their small-scale work, but they remain hopeful for future earnings. The festival has been an excellent platform for showcasing their craftsmanship, with Ravula selling handmade items such as bags and toiletry kits.

Throughout this week’s festival, vendors have experienced positive sales, with some anticipating earnings of $1,000 from the week’s activities. Ravula expressed gratitude for the support received, and both she and other vendors are dedicated to continually improving their businesses.

The festival serves as a testament to the resilience of local entrepreneurs and the vibrant culinary culture of Fiji.
