Fijian Flying Circus Launches Inaugural New Zealand Tour

The Fijian Flying Circus is taking a significant leap forward as the group gears up for its inaugural tour of New Zealand, an endeavor proudly supported by the New Zealand High Commission. This marks a pivotal moment not only for the group but also for the broader Fijian arts sector, highlighting a growing recognition and appreciation for performing arts in Fiji.

Stuart Tawake Tuidela, a member of the circus, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I think now we are stepping into a new point of view, a new direction in terms of where we are now in Fiji, where we grew up. Performing arts is not really taken seriously. But now it’s looking in a good direction.” This sentiment underscores a significant cultural shift towards valuing local artistic expressions.

The group aims to inspire Fijians living in New Zealand and foster a deeper appreciation for the creative talents originating from their homeland. Tuidela encourages young dancers to pursue their passions wholeheartedly and to trust in a higher guidance as they navigate their artistic journeys.

Fellow performer Giovanna Varea reflected on the journey leading to this tour—a culmination of two years filled with hard work, dedication, and relentless training. Adding to their achievements, the group has been selected as headliners for a major concert in New Zealand, an opportunity they initially regarded as a joke. “This is huge for us as a group,” Varea said, highlighting the significance of this milestone.

Balancing performances, training, and the various responsibilities that come with being leaders in the arts community has posed considerable challenges. Yet, the group’s commitment to discipline and passion fuels their progress and perseverance.

With this upcoming tour, the Fijian Flying Circus is not just showcasing its talents but is also paving the way for the performing arts scene in Fiji, reinforcing that it is ready to embrace the global stage. This endeavor serves as a hopeful reminder that cultural appreciation is blossoming in Fiji, and there is much to celebrate in the realm of local artistry.
