“Fijian Families Struggle: Should Universities Stop Fee Hikes?”

Ketan Lal, the Shadow Minister for Justice, has voiced his concerns regarding the potential increase in university fees for the upcoming academic year amidst the escalating cost of living in Fiji. He emphasized that this is not an opportune time for universities to impose higher fees when many Fijian families are already struggling financially.

Lal highlighted that while periodic fee reviews are common, the current economic instability necessitates a reconsideration of any planned increases. He urged universities to be mindful of the financial hardships ordinary Fijians are facing, particularly with the rising prices affecting their day-to-day lives.

Although the Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Scheme (TSLS) exists to support students pursuing higher education, Lal pointed out that many may opt for private education due to the stringent bond requirements set by the Government. He underscored that an increase in fees would place an additional, unbearable burden on these students.

Concerned about the Prime Minister’s declaration of 2025 being a “special year,” Lal questioned the efficacy of such statements when families are struggling to meet their basic needs. He called for concrete actions instead of merely rhetorical promises, stressing the urgency for leadership that prioritizes the welfare of the population.

Lal urged universities to demonstrate compassion and solidarity with their students by freezing any fee increases and called upon the Government to ensure education remains accessible to all.
