A new opportunity has arisen for Fijian workers participating in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme (PALM) as they are now able to bring their families to Australia under the newly launched Family Accompaniment Pilot. A total of 106 Fijian workers have been selected for this initiative, with pre-departure briefings organized for their families in the key locations of Suva, Nadi, and Labasa.

These briefings conducted by the Australian High Commission are designed to equip families with essential information covering various important topics, including cultural integration, financial literacy, health and emergency procedures, parental rights and responsibilities, government benefits, education options, and accommodation details.

Once in Australia, these families will have access to several benefits. They can apply for the Family Tax Benefit, Childcare Subsidy, and Medicare. Additionally, the partners of PALM scheme workers will also have the right to work in Australia, while children will have the opportunity to attend school, enhancing their educational prospects.

This initiative not only strengthens family bonds but also supports the economic contribution of Fijian workers in Australia, fostering a sense of community and stability in a new environment. The inclusion of families is a positive step that acknowledges the importance of family relations and the support they provide to individuals working abroad.

Overall, this pilot program reflects Australia’s commitment to promoting strong family units and improving the welfare of migrant workers and their dependents. It allows for a more holistic approach to migration that prioritizes family togetherness and integration.
