In December, the Fiji Bureau of Statistics (FBoS) recorded that 152 Fijians emigrated to various countries. Among these, a significant portion, 81 individuals, made their way to New Zealand, while 47 relocated to Australia. Additionally, one person moved to Canada.

The FBoS reported that a total of 25,811 Fijians departed the country in December, indicating a robust movement of residents abroad. Of this total, the majority, 24,707 individuals, were traveling for short-term visits lasting under three months. The reports also detailed that 390 people left for periods exceeding three months but less than a year, while 714 residents planned for longer-term absences of one year or more.

This emigration trend reflects the ongoing movement of Fijians seeking new opportunities and experiences abroad. The previous months’ statistics show a consistent pattern, with hundreds of residents leaving for similar reasons. In October, for instance, 609 Fijians left for long durations, and November witnessed 943 residents opting for longer stays.

These patterns underline a significant dynamic within Fijian society, wherein many individuals are not only pursuing employment opportunities but also benefiting from international experiences that may eventually contribute to Fiji’s socio-economic development. As this trend continues, it highlights both challenges in retaining talent and opportunities for growth through the experiences gained abroad.

Overall, while these statistics point to a notable number of Fijians leaving for extended periods, they may also pave the way for future contributions to the nation’s development when individuals return home with new skills and insights.
