The recent trip of the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua to Napier, New Zealand, has raised significant concerns among fans and players regarding the treatment they received leading up to their crucial Super Rugby match against the Hurricanes. After a grueling long-haul flight, the Drua arrived in Auckland only to find themselves without transportation to their accommodation, resulting in players and staff having to travel in the back of a truck. Their ordeal was further exacerbated when the hotel denied the team a late checkout, forcing them to wait in the lobby or roam outside until their next commitment.

This situation starkly contrasts with the experiences of the Hurricanes, who enjoyed extended comfort and rest in their accommodations. Former Fijian international winger Nemani Nadolo expressed his frustrations on social media, asserting that the Drua faced a psychological disadvantage upon their arrival in Auckland. He highlighted the difference in treatment compared to the first-class hospitality that Super Rugby teams experience in Fiji, where they benefit from police escorts and superior lodging.

Captain Frank Lomani shared similar sentiments after their narrow 38-34 defeat to the Hurricanes, suggesting that with more equitable treatment, the Drua could have performed even better. Nevertheless, Lomani maintained an optimistic outlook for the team’s future, praising the young talent and resilience within the squad as they prepare for upcoming matches.

Head coach Glen Jackson also acknowledged the travel and accommodation challenges faced during their trip, but he remained proud of his team’s determination despite the loss to the Hurricanes. He expressed confidence in their potential for growth and improvement as they move forward in the competition.

As the Drua get ready for their next match, fans are hopeful that the difficulties they’ve faced will inspire a stronger performance throughout the season. With a focus on resilience and player development, the Drua aim to convert their past adversities into future successes, reflecting the unwavering spirit characteristic of rugby in Fiji.
