The Fiji Water Flying Fijians experienced a tough defeat against Scotland, losing 17-57 in a recent match. Despite this setback, Fijian Drua CEO Mark Evans is optimistic about the future of rugby in Fiji. The team, predominantly composed of local players from Fijian Drua, utilized this match as a chance to evaluate the squad’s depth, given that several important European-based players were not available due to release window restrictions.

Evans expressed confidence in the team’s resilience, noting that even in the absence of 10 European-based players and five Drua players due to injuries, the performance remained competitive. “It’s great for Fiji because even with those key Drua players unavailable, our squad is still looking strong,” he stated.

He highlighted that the Drua’s development mirrors that of serious international teams, emphasizing the growing depth within the squad. “At last we’ve got some depth. This is how serious international teams operate,” he said.

Looking towards the future, Evans noted that the team’s current priority is to ensure injured players regain full fitness before the preseason commences. He stated, “We’re not thinking too much about the preseason just yet… It’s all about developing the younger guys.”

A crucial aspect of this development strategy is the Fijian Drua’s 7s program, which allows coaches to focus on nurturing talent and rehabilitating injured players. “The 7s program is vital for us right now,” he remarked, as it provides an opportunity for top coaches to work closely with emerging players.

Evans concluded with hope for the Flying Fijians’ return in December and underlined the importance of building a solid foundation for the future of Fijian rugby. With strong leadership and an emphasis on youth development, the Fijian Drua looks set to progress and achieve greater successes in the seasons ahead.

This message of resilience and planning for the future is not only important for fans of Fijian rugby but also highlights the potential for growth in international sports, showcasing how challenges can pave the way for future strength and success.
