The Fijian Drua women’s rugby team is gearing up for an exciting season in the Super W competition, with several high-profile players expected to join the squad. Notably, former Fijiana 7s captain Rusila Nagasau has reportedly secured her spot in the lineup, having been spotted in recent training videos shared on social media. These videos were taken during their training sessions at the Sand Dunes in Sigatoka last December, where she was seen alongside fellow former stars Alowesi Nakoci and Raijeli Daveua, who will be leading the Fijiana 7s team at the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
These talented athletes were instrumental in Fiji’s historic bronze medal victory at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which adds to the anticipation of their performance this season. The team will also benefit from the return of Timaima Ravisa, an accomplished player with a diverse background in sevens, union, and league. Ravisa trained with the Drua recently; she previously played for Stade Rennais Rugby in France and was pivotal in the team’s Super W title win during their debut in 2022. Additionally, Kolora Lomani is returning to the Drua after her stint with the Brumbies women, bringing further experience as she represented Fiji at the upcoming Paris Olympics.
The training sessions have also included emerging local talents such as Alfreda Fisher, Isabella Koi, Carletta Yee, and Josifini Naihamu from Namosi, adding strength and depth to the squad. The official announcement of the Fijian Drua women’s team is scheduled for January 29 in line with competition regulations.
As the season unfolds, the Drua women’s team is set to blend the experience of seasoned Olympians with the enthusiasm of rising local players. This mix not only fosters hope for their success in the Super W competition but also highlights the growth of women’s rugby both in Fiji and across the Pacific region. The Drua women’s first competitive match is against the Waratahs on February 28 in Sydney, with home games following that will surely excite local fans. This season promises to be a significant chapter in the journey of women’s rugby in Fiji, showcasing talent and perseverance on bigger stages.
