The Fijian Drua women’s team is gearing up for an exciting season in the Super W competition, showcasing a roster filled with well-known players. Among the notable names is former Fijiana 7s captain Rusila Nagasau, who has reportedly secured her place on the team following her appearance in training videos shared on social media. These clips, filmed during training sessions at the Sand Dunes in Sigatoka in December, also featured Alowesi Nakoci and Raijeli Daveua, who is set to lead the Fijiana 7s at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
These athletes were pivotal in helping Fiji achieve a historic bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which raises excitement for their contributions this season. The Drua will also benefit from Timaima Ravisa’s return, an experienced player in sevens, union, and league, who recently trained with the team after a stint at Stade Rennais Rugby in France. Ravisa was instrumental in the Drua’s Super W title win in their debut season in 2022. Kolora Lomani, another key returning player, has returned to the Drua after playing with the Brumbies women and represented Fiji in the Paris Olympics.
In addition to these seasoned players, the training sessions have also included local talents such as Alfreda Fisher, Isabella Koi, Carletta Yee, and Josifini Naihamu from Namosi, enhancing the team’s depth. The official squad announcement is scheduled for January 29, in compliance with competition rules.
With the opening match against the Waratahs set for February 28 in Sydney, the Drua women’s team aims to combine the experience of Olympic veterans with the enthusiasm of emerging local talents. This blend not only cultivates hope for success in the Super W competition but also underscores the growth of women’s rugby in Fiji and the broader Pacific region. As the season unfolds, fans can look forward to an exciting display of talent and determination.
