The Fijian Drua women’s rugby team is gearing up for an exciting season in the Super W competition, with several prominent players returning to the squad. Notably, former Fijiana 7s captain Rusila Nagasau has reportedly secured her spot after being seen in training videos on social media, which were filmed during workouts at the Sand Dunes in Sigatoka last December. Joining her will be fellow former stars Alowesi Nakoci and Raijeli Daveua, who is set to captain the Fijiana 7s team in the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
These athletes were instrumental in Fiji’s historic bronze medal achievement at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, fueling anticipation for their contributions this season. The Drua will also see the return of Timaima Ravisa, who previously played in France with Stade Rennais Rugby and was instrumental in the team’s Super W title win in 2022. Kolora Lomani is another notable returnee, bringing her experience from her stint with the Brumbies women’s team and participation in the 2024 Olympics.
In addition to these seasoned players, the Drua squad will be strengthened by local talents spotted during training, including Alfreda Fisher, Isabella Koi, Carletta Yee, and Josifini Naihamu. The official team announcement is scheduled for January 29, aligning with competition rules.
This season, the Drua women’s team is poised to combine Olympic experience with emerging local talent, creating a hopeful dynamic for an impressive performance in the Super W competition. The opening match against the Waratahs is set for February 28 in Sydney, with home matches to follow that will allow fans to rally behind their team.
The mixture of seasoned players and fresh talent showcases a strategic approach to women’s rugby in Fiji and bodes well for a competitive and inspiring season ahead, demonstrating a commitment to the sport’s growth in the region.
