The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua has unveiled its squad for the 2025 Shop N Save Super Rugby season, showcasing a robust lineup featuring 32 Flying Fijians. Among these players is the national co-captain, marking a significant milestone for the team as they prepare for the upcoming competition. This announcement follows a productive off-season recruitment effort, with all five new signings being Flying Fijians, who are anticipated to significantly influence the team’s performance. Notably, three players in this squad were part of the silver medal-winning Rugby 7s team at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The development squad comprises promising young Fijian talents poised to achieve greater accolades in the future. Head Coach Glen Jackson commented on the team’s strong structure, emphasizing that they have retained most of the players from last season while incorporating experienced recruits from overseas, including returning player Joe Tamani, who previously brought excitement to the team.
For the first time in its history, the Fijian Drua has appointed co-captains, with hooker Tevita Ikanivere and halfback Frank Lomani taking on leadership roles for the season. Ikanivere has extensive experience, having made the most appearances for the Drua and contributing significant tries to the team. Lomani, who is the most seasoned player in the squad, expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to co-lead the team, recognizing its journey since inception.
Among the new recruits is the 50-Test capped player Peni Ravai from the Queensland Reds, as well as tough centre Inia Tabuavou from France’s Racing 92. Additionally, Vuate Karawalevu returns after representing the NSW Waratahs, and Ponipate Loganimasi, a silver medalist from the Paris Olympics, has joined after a stint with the Fiji 7s team. Joseva Tamani also returns to the Drua from Colomiers Rugby Club.
The squad is further strengthened with an all-Flying Fijian trio of hookers and a powerful back row. The team is gearing up for an exciting season with a splendid mix of experienced players and fresh talent.
This announcement heralds a promising future for the Fijian Drua, highlighting their commitment to nurturing local talent while also harnessing international experience. Fans can look forward to an exhilarating season as the team strives for success in the 2025 Super Rugby competition.
