The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua has unveiled its squad for the 2025 Shop N Save Super Rugby season, highlighting a strong presence of 32 Flying Fijians, including the national co-captain. This announcement marks the culmination of a fruitful off-season recruitment campaign, with all five new signings for 2025 being Flying Fijians who are anticipated to significantly influence the competition. Notably, three squad members are Silver Medalists from the Rugby 7s team at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The development squad includes several promising young players from Fiji who are on the trajectory towards greater aspirations in rugby.
Head Coach Glen Jackson expressed confidence in the strength and balance of the team, noting minimal losses from the previous year and the introduction of experienced players, particularly those returning from overseas. He highlighted Joe Tamani’s return from France as a key factor, especially given his previous contributions during the team’s first two seasons.
In a significant leadership move, the Drua appointed co-captains for the first time, with hooker Tevita Ikanivere and halfback Frank Lomani taking on the leadership roles. Ikanivere, who has made 38 appearances for the Drua and scored 10 tries, has already demonstrated leadership skills by co-captaining the national team. Meanwhile, Lomani, the most seasoned player in the squad with 53 appearances, is one of only two players to have scored over 100 Super Rugby Pacific points.
Ikanivere expressed his gratitude for the captaincy, appreciating the trust placed in him, while Lomani shared his excitement and emotions regarding the joint leadership role, acknowledging the journey the team has undergone since its inception.
The squad has also been reinforced by the acquisition of well-regarded players, including Peni Ravai, a 50-Test veteran, who comes from the Queensland Reds, along with Inia Tabuavou from Racing 92, and several talented returnees.
The squad’s composition reflects a solid foundation with a blend of youth and experience across various positions, emphasizing a bright and competitive future for the Fijian Drua in the upcoming Super Rugby season.
Overall, the formation of a well-rounded squad coupled with capable leadership sets the stage for a promising 2025 season. As the team prepares for its challenges ahead, there is an air of optimism surrounding its potential success, fueled by local talent and newly integrated players. With the right preparation and teamwork, the Drua could make significant strides in Super Rugby and continue to inspire Fijian rugby fans.
