Local rugby teams will have the opportunity to showcase their skills against the Fijian Drua in next week’s third edition of the Fiji Bitter Mataso 7s tournament. This marks the Fijian Drua’s inaugural participation in the event, which Tournament Director James Vulinituraga anticipates will be the start of a long-term partnership.
Vulinituraga emphasized that the funds generated from this year’s tournament will contribute to the ongoing construction of a community bridge, demonstrating a commitment not only to sports but also to community development.
In addition to local teams, the Fiji 7s national team will be represented with two trial teams comprising players from their extended squad. A diverse lineup of competitors is expected, with a total of 32 men’s teams, 8 women’s teams, and 16 Under-20 teams set to participate. The tournament will offer a prize pool of $8,500.
This event not only provides an exciting platform for local talent to compete against a prestigious team but also highlights the importance of sports in fostering community support and development. The engagement of the Fijian Drua signifies potential growth for the tournament and an opportunity for showcasing rugby at various levels.
Overall, the Mataso 7s promises to be a vibrant celebration of rugby and community spirit, with exciting matches ahead and developmental initiatives in progress.
