The recent pre-season camp for the Kadavu Swire Shipping Fijian Drua men’s team has brought a wave of nostalgia and joy to four squad members as they reconnect with their roots. Players Philip Baselala, Simione Kuruvoli, Kemu Valetini, and Vuate Karawalevu have returned to their home turf of Kadavu, experiencing both the warmth of family connections and the thrill of local training sessions.

The squad kicked off their camp with a traditional welcome ceremony at the Namalata Central School grounds, followed by their first training session on-site. Kuruvoli, who hails from Nabouwalu, expressed how meaningful this homecoming is for him and his teammates, particularly for those who don’t visit often. He noted the importance of connecting with family and the local community, as they also conducted sessions aimed at inspiring young local players.

Karawalevu shared his gratitude for the opportunity to train in such a picturesque setting, remarking on the experience being especially enriching for those visiting Kadavu for the first time. Baselala added that training back on his home soil allows for team bonding and showcases the beauty of his island to his teammates.

As part of their training, the team ventured into Namalata Bay for a boat race exercise, with villagers cheering them on. Head coach Glen Jackson reflected on the experience, highlighting the ideal weather and cultural elements like the traditional kava ceremony that enriched their training.

The Drua men will be returning home after a week of meaningful interactions and training in Kadavu. This pre-season camp not only represents a chance to hone their skills but also a unique opportunity to embrace their heritage, strengthening their bond as a team.

This heartwarming initiative showcases the importance of community, connection to roots, and the enriching experiences that can come from blending sporting commitments with cultural appreciation. Such events might inspire future generations and foster a deeper sense of belonging among local athletes.
