The four members of the Kadavu Swire Shipping Fijian Drua men’s squad are experiencing a heartfelt homecoming as they engage in their pre-season camp in Namalata, Kadavu. Halfback Philip Baselala, Simione Kuruvoli, Kemu Valetini, and fullback Vuate Karawalevu are all part of this significant event, which includes a traditional welcome and training sessions at Namalata Central School grounds.

Twenty-five-year-old Kuruvoli, originally from Nabouwalu, Ono, expressed how important this trip is for reconnecting with his family and heritage. He highlighted the rarity of such visits, especially for teammates from the Western region, and emphasized the joy of bonding with local families and inspiring the next generation of rugby players.

Karawalevu, hailing from Dravuwalu, echoed Kuruvoli’s sentiments regarding the significance of hosting their pre-season activities in Kadavu. For players who are new to the island, this opportunity serves as a memorable getaway. Baselala, from Solotavui, Nakasaleka, also shared his enthusiasm for being on his home soil, noting the importance of team bonding and showcasing the island’s natural beauty to his teammates.

The squad recently engaged in a vigorous boat race exercise in Namalata Bay, drawing cheers from villagers who came out to support them. Head coach Glen Jackson praised the experience as enriching, enjoying the perfect weather conditions and participating in the traditional kava ceremony. Additionally, Nacani Cawanibuka, the head of athletic performance, also shares his roots in Kadavu.

The Drua men are set to return after this enriching experience, carrying with them the heartwarming memories of their homecoming and the bonds they’ve strengthened during this camp.

This story beautifully captures the essence of community, culture, and sportsmanship. It is encouraging to see athletes returning to their roots and giving back to their local communities, inspiring the next generation and fostering connections that transcend the sport itself.
