The Kadavu Swire Shipping Fijian Drua men’s squad members are relishing their homecoming as they engage in a pre-season camp this week in Namalata, Kadavu. Four key players—halfback Philip Baselala, Simione Kuruvoli, Kemu Valetini, and fullback Vuate Karawalevu—are taking the opportunity to reconnect with their roots while training in their native land.

After a traditional welcome ceremony, the team kicked off their first training session at the grounds of Namalata Central School on Tuesday. Kuruvoli, who is originally from Nabouwalu, Ono, expressed his gratitude for the chance to visit. He noted how meaningful the trip was, especially for those from outside Kadavu, highlighting the importance of connecting with family, friends, and local communities.

Baselala, who calls Solotavui, Nakasaleka home, echoed similar feelings by describing the experience as an opportunity to showcase the beauty of his island to his teammates. The squad also took their training to the open waters of Namalata Bay, engaging in a vigorous boat race exercise while being cheered on by local villagers.

Head coach Glen Jackson reflected on the enriching experience provided by the boat trip, the perfect weather, and the cultural significance of the kava ceremony. Nacani Cawanibuka, the Drua’s head of athletic performance, also shares a connection to Kadavu.

The Drua men are set to return from this rewarding experience tomorrow, leaving behind not just memories but a spirit of community and connection.

This camp not only aids in team bonding but also showcases the team’s commitment to their roots and the importance of giving back to the local community, particularly inspiring the youth of Kadavu.

In summary, this heartfelt experience is a reminder that sports can foster deep connections to culture and community, providing players with a greater sense of identity and belonging.
