Returning to their roots has been an uplifting experience for four members of the Kadavu Swire Shipping Fijian Drua men’s squad. Halfback Philip Baselala, Simione Kuruvoli, Kemu Valetini, and fullback Vuate Karawalevu are currently participating in a pre-season camp in Namalata, Kadavu.
The squad kicked off their training at the Namalata Central School grounds, following a heartfelt traditional welcome ceremony. Kuruvoli, 25, who originates from Nabouwalu in Ono, expressed the significance of their visit to reconnect with his family and community. He emphasized the rarity of such visits for players from other regions, stating, “For the Kadavu boys, it’s good to come and connect with the family and visit our people and villages.”
Karawalevu shared similar sentiments and voiced his gratitude that the pre-season training was held in his home area, noting it serves as an encouraging getaway, especially for those visiting Kadavu for the first time. Baselala, who hails from Solotavui in Nakasaleka, expressed how meaningful it is to practice on his homeland, allowing for team bonding while showcasing the beauty of what he calls “the hidden paradise.”
The team engaged in a challenging boat race in Namalata Bay, cheered on by local villagers. Head coach Glen Jackson remarked on the excellent experience provided by the boat trip, pleasant weather, and the traditional kava ceremony. Notably, Nacani Cawanibuka, the head of athletic performance for Drua, also shares roots in Kadavu.
As the squad prepares to head back after this enriching experience, it is clear that this connection to their home community has fostered team unity and provided positive motivation for the upcoming season. Events like these highlight the importance of cultural ties and serve as a reminder of the significant role community plays in individual and collective growth in sports.
