The return of four members of the Kadavu Swire Shipping Fijian Drua men’s squad to their home island has been an uplifting experience. Halfback Philip Baselala, Simione Kuruvoli, Kemu Valetini, and fullback Vuate Karawalevu are currently participating in a pre-season camp at Namalata, Kadavu. The team’s journey began with a traditional welcome ceremony followed by their first training session at the Namalata Central School grounds.
Kuruvoli, who is 25 years old and from Nabouwalu, expressed how meaningful this trip is for him, highlighting the importance of connecting with family and visiting his community. He noted, “We don’t come here often especially the Western gang; for the Kadavu boys, it’s good to come and connect with the family and visit our people and villages.” He emphasized the joy of giving back to young players in the area.
Karawalevu echoed these feelings of gratitude for having the pre-season camp on the island, stating that the opportunity is especially beneficial for teammates experiencing Kadavu for the first time. Baselala, from Solotavui, Nakasaleka, shared his excitement about showcasing his beautiful island – referring to it as a hidden paradise – while also participating in team bonding activities.
The squad also took advantage of the open sea for their training, conducting a challenging boat race at Namalata Bay, cheered on by local villagers. Head coach Glen Jackson praised the experience, noting the combination of the boat trip, pleasant weather, and traditional kava ceremony as highlights of their time in Kadavu.
As the Drua men prepare to return the following Friday, their experience serves not only as a training opportunity but also as a heartfelt reconnection with their roots and the community they represent.
This heartfelt visit highlights the importance of cultural ties and community, showcasing how sports can foster connections and build bonds between athletes and their heritage. It’s a reminder that success in sports goes beyond the field, rooted in the communities and families that support the athletes.
