The return to their home ground has been an uplifting experience for four members of the Kadavu Swire Shipping Fijian Drua men’s rugby team. These players—halfback Philip Baselala, Simione Kuruvoli, Kemu Valetini, and fullback Vuate Karawalevu—are participating in a pre-season camp this week at Namalata in Kadavu.
The team kicked off their training with a session at the Namalata Central School grounds after being welcomed in a traditional ceremony. Simione Kuruvoli, 25, from Nabouwalu, Ono, expressed how special the visit is for him to reconnect with his heritage. “It means a lot,” he stated, appreciating the opportunity to visit home and engage with their families and local communities, particularly the youth.
Karawalevu, from Dravuwalu, echoed these sentiments, expressing gratitude for the chance to hold their pre-season training in Kadavu, especially beneficial for teammates who are visiting the island for the first time. Philip Baselala, representing Solotavui, Nakasaleka, also emphasized the importance of being back on his home soil, stating that it allows for team bonding and showcases the beauty of Kadavu.
The squad took their training to the ocean, participating in a challenging boat race at Namalata Bay, cheered on by locals. Head coach Glen Jackson remarked on the enriching experience, which included enjoying the pleasant weather and a traditional kava ceremony. Notably, Nacani Cawanibuka, the Drua’s head of athletic performance, also has roots in Kadavu.
This commitment to connecting with their heritage and community showcases the team’s spirit and dedication, and it serves as an inspiring reminder of the importance of staying connected to one’s roots while pursuing professional ambitions. The Drua men are set to return tomorrow, enriched by this experience and the bonds formed within their hometown.
Overall, this initiative reinforces the significance of cultural ties and community involvement in sports. It is a hopeful indication that in today’s fast-paced world, athletes can still find ways to honor their past while embracing their futures.
