The Fijian Drua has officially welcomed Vodafone Deans standout Maleli Nauvasi to its Development program.
Nauvasi, who shone in the Deans competition as a member of Queen Victoria School, contributed significantly to his team’s victory in the premier (U-18) title in 2024. He was named player of the match in the final against Nasinu Secondary School.
This signing is part of the Drua’s renewed initiative to identify exceptional local talent at an earlier stage and to create pathways that may lead to professional contracts with the Super Rugby Pacific squad.
Hailing from Dratabu in Nadi, Nauvasi recently participated in the Fiji Schoolboys U18 team, where they secured victories against the Australia Schoolboys U18 in two matches last week, during which he scored a try and provided an assist.
Over the years, Nauvasi has represented QVS in the Deans competition, from U14 to U18, showcasing versatility as he played at flyhalf, wing, and fullback.
Expressing his excitement, the young athlete said, “I’m really excited to be part of the Development program here at the Drua, especially staying close to my parents. I am very happy for this opportunity.”
Ifereimi Rawaqa, the Fijian Drua Development and Skills Coach, expressed his enthusiasm about bringing Nauvasi into the program, recognizing his exceptional talent and discipline on the field. “I’m confident that with the right guidance and support, he has the potential to make a significant impact in the years to come,” Rawaqa stated. “It’s a great opportunity for him to train alongside elite athletes and learn what it takes to compete at the highest level.”
Rawaqa further emphasized the commitment of the team to support Nauvasi’s growth in rugby. The development program aims to equip young players with the necessary resources, coaching, and high-performance environment to make the switch to professional rugby.
Nauvasi joins a group of 10 other young players in the Drua Development squad. The development contract ensures they receive a salary and training alongside the Super Rugby Pacific squad most days of the week. Additionally, these players will have the opportunity to compete for provincial sides in the Skipper Cup, which runs concurrently with the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific.
