The Fijian Drua has officially signed Vodafone Deans standout Maleli Nauvasi to its Development program.

Nauvasi, a center from Queen Victoria School, played a pivotal role in securing his school’s victory in the premier (U-18) title of the Deans competition in 2024. He was named player of the match in the final against Nasinu Secondary School.

This signing reflects the Fijian Drua’s renewed commitment to identifying exceptional local talent at an earlier stage and guiding them toward potential professional contracts within the Super Rugby Pacific squad.

Hailing from Dratabu in Nadi, Nauvasi was also part of the Fiji Schoolboys U18 team that achieved two victories against the Australia Schoolboys U18 last week, where he scored a try and contributed an assist.

During his time at QVS, Nauvasi competed in the Deans competition from U14 to U18, showcasing versatility by playing as a flyhalf, wing, and fullback.

Nauvasi expressed his enthusiasm for joining the Development program, stating, “I’m really excited to be part of the Development program here at the Drua, especially staying close to my parents. I am very happy for this opportunity.”

Ifereimi Rawaqa, the Fijian Drua Development and Skills Coach, expressed his delight at welcoming Nauvasi, emphasizing his exceptional talent and discipline on the field. Rawaqa stated, “Nauvasi has proven himself as a standout performer in the Deans and also in the Fiji Schoolboys U18. I’m confident that with the right guidance and support, he has the potential to make a significant impact in the years to come.”

Rawaqa added that this opportunity will allow Nauvasi to train alongside elite athletes and learn what is required to excel at higher levels.

The development program aims to equip young players like Nauvasi with the essential resources, coaching, and high-performance environment needed for a smooth transition into professional rugby.

Nauvasi joins a cohort of 10 other young talents in the Drua Development squad. The development contract provides these players with a salary and regular training sessions with the Super Rugby Pacific squad, alongside opportunities to compete for provincial teams in the Skipper Cup.
