Fijian Drua Signs Rising Star Maleli Nauvasi for Development Program

The Fijian Drua has recruited Vodafone Deans standout Maleli Nauvasi into the club’s Development Program. The Queen Victoria School center was a key player in the Deans competition, leading his team to victory in the premier U-18 title in 2024. Nauvasi was recognized as the player of the match during the final against Nasinu Secondary School.

Nauvasi’s signing aligns with the Fijian Drua’s renewed emphasis on identifying and nurturing local talent at an early stage to facilitate their progression toward professional contracts with the Super Rugby Pacific squad. Hailing from Dratabu in Nadi, Nauvasi also represented the Fiji Schoolboys U18 team that achieved two victories against the Australia Schoolboys U18 last week, scoring a try and providing an assist during that series.

He has been involved with QVS in the Deans competition from U14 to U18 levels, showcasing his versatility by playing various positions, including flyhalf, wing, and fullback. Expressing his enthusiasm, the modest young athlete stated, “I’m really excited to be part of the Development program here at the Drua, especially staying close to my parents. I am very happy for this opportunity.”

Ifereimi Rawaqa, the Fijian Drua Development and Skills Coach, expressed his delight in welcoming Nauvasi to the program. He highlighted Nauvasi’s exceptional talent and discipline on the field, noting his impressive performance in both the Deans competition and with the Fiji Schoolboys U18 team. Rawaqa stated confidence in Nauvasi’s potential to make a significant impact with the right guidance and support, looking forward to his training alongside elite athletes and monitoring his development.

The Drua aims to support Nauvasi’s growth and journey in rugby through its development program, which is structured to equip young players with essential resources, coaching, and a high-performance environment necessary for transitioning into professional rugby. Nauvasi joins a group of 10 other young players in the Drua Development squad, where they receive a salary and train regularly with the Super Rugby Pacific team. Players in the development program also have the opportunity to compete for provincial teams in the Skipper Cup alongside the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific season.
