The Fijian Drua has welcomed Vodafone Deans standout Maleli Nauvasi into the club’s Development program. Nauvasi, who played for Queen Victoria School, had a remarkable performance in the Deans competition, helping his team secure the premier (U-18) title in 2024, where he was named player of the match in the final against Nasinu Secondary School.
Nauvasi’s signing is part of the Fijian Drua’s renewed commitment to identifying exceptional local talent early and providing pathways to professional contracts within the Super Rugby Pacific squad. Originating from Dratabu in Nadi, Nauvasi was a member of the Fiji Schoolboys U18 team that recently triumphed over the Australia Schoolboys U18 in two matches, contributing a try and an assist during that series.
He played for QVS in the Deans competition from U14 to U18 and has experience in various positions, including flyhalf, wing, and fullback. Expressing his excitement, Nauvasi shared, “I’m really excited to be part of the Development program here at the Drua, especially staying close to my parents. I am very happy for this opportunity.”
Ifereimi Rawaqa, the Fijian Drua Development and Skills Coach, expressed his enthusiasm about Nauvasi joining the program, acknowledging his exceptional talent and discipline on the field. Rawaqa stated, “Nauvasi has proven himself as a standout performer in the Deans and also in the Fiji Schoolboys U18. I’m confident that with the right guidance and support, he has the potential to make a significant impact in the years to come.”
The development program aims to equip young players like Nauvasi with the necessary resources, coaching, and environment to transition into professional rugby. Nauvasi joins a group of 10 other young athletes in the Drua Development squad, which includes a contract that provides them with a salary and training alongside the Super Rugby Pacific squad most days of the week. Additionally, development players are eligible to compete for provincial teams in the Skipper Cup, running concurrently with the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific.
