Fijian Drua Signs Olympic Star Ponipate Loganimasi: What’s Next?

The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua has announced the signing of Fijian 7s star and Paris Olympics Silver Medallist Ponipate Loganimasi on a full-time contract. The fast and talented player will join his fellow Paris Olympics teammates Iosefo Masi and Selestino Ravutaumada in the Drua Men’s squad for the 2025 Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific.

Loganimasi, 26, made a significant impact during his debut with the FIJI Water Flying Fijians, scoring two tries in the Pacific Nations Cup final against Japan. He stepped in for Ravutaumada after the latter suffered an injury in the tournament’s first round.

Originating from Ono-i-Lau and having maternal links to Nabua in Savusavu, Loganimasi scored an impressive 35 tries during his brief time with the Fijian 7s team in the 2023-24 World Series campaign and contributed to their silver medal at the Paris Olympics. Additionally, he showcased his skills at the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens tournament while representing the Fiji Babaas team.

Loganimasi made his local competition debut at the Nawaka 7s last year, where he captained the Kombat Uluinakau team. As a player who is also proficient in the outside back position in 15s rugby, he expressed his enthusiasm about joining the Fijian Drua. He stated, “I want to thank the Lord for the opportunity. I know it’s not a small opportunity; it is a big one. I know a lot of kids in Fiji dream about playing for the Drua team, and I am so blessed to be given the chance.” He also expressed gratitude to the Drua management for their trust and looks forward to beginning training with his new teammates.

Fijian Drua Head Coach Glen Jackson commented on the signing, stating, “It means a lot for Fijian Drua; it shows the quality of players we’re signing. Loganimasi’s debut with the 15s team was unbelievable.” He added that they recognize Loganimasi’s talent on the sevens circuit and anticipate him being a valuable addition to the club.

Loganimasi is the fifth player from the Flying Fijians to be signed by the Drua this off-season, as part of a strong recruitment strategy that has already brought in notable internationals such as Joseva Tamani, Peni Ravai, Inia Tabuavou, and Vuate Karawalevu.
