The Flying Fijians lock, Temo Mayanavanua, is anticipated to be officially announced as the newest member of the Fijian Drua. Currently with the Northampton Saints in England, the club has confirmed that Mayanavanua will leave this summer to take on a playing role back in Fiji.
At 27, Mayanavanua made his debut for the Flying Fijians in 2020 against Georgia. His career includes three years with Northland in New Zealand, followed by time at Lyon in France, before moving to England.
Mayanavanua’s move to the Fijian Drua aligns with a broader trend of Fijian players returning from overseas clubs to local teams. Recently, several Fijian players have made similar transitions, with notable examples including captain Waisea Nayacalevu leaving Toulon for Sale Sharks and Inia Tabuavou moving from Racing 92 to join the Fijian Drua for the upcoming Super Rugby Pacific season.
This influx of talent is seen as a positive development for Fijian rugby, reinforcing the strength of domestic teams and inspiring young athletes in Fiji to pursue rugby. As these players return, it not only enhances the competitiveness of local clubs like the Fijian Drua but also fosters a sense of community and national pride in rugby.
With all the new signings and returning players, the future looks promising for the Fijian Drua and Fijian rugby overall. Fans can look forward to an exciting season filled with homegrown talent and the revitalization of domestic rugby competitions.
