Flying Fijians fullback Vuate Karawalevu has drawn attention for his impressive defensive skills and accurate kicks during the team’s recent win over Samoa. Glen Jackson, head coach of the Fijian Drua, indicated that Karawalevu, who hails from Dravuwalu in Kadavu, might join the Drua next season.
Karawalevu, 23, who captained the rugby team at Marist Brothers High School and won a gold medal in the 400 meters at the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics competition, played for the Kaiviti Silktails in 2021 and was part of the Fiji Bati squad during the 2021 Rugby World Cup. He is currently under contract with the Waratahs for two seasons.
Jackson praised the contribution of the 14 Drua players who participated in the Flying Fijians’ commanding 42-16 victory over Samoa in their first Pacific Nations Cup match on August 23 at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. He also announced that the Drua team would hold its pre-season camp in Kadavu, noting plans for renovations at their training base to create a better environment for developing elite players.
The return of Joseva Tamani, capable of playing both back row and lock, is seen as a significant advantage for the club. New signings Peni Ravai and Inia Tabuavou have also been added to the squad. Jackson highlighted Ravai’s extensive experience and ability to mentor the front row players, as well as his impact on games.
The Drua’s newly formed center partnership will feature Iosefo Masi alongside former Racing 92 player Tabuavou, who recently made an impressive second test appearance against Samoa, showcasing his speed, defensive skills, and determination.
Baden Stephenson, the new interim general manager of Fijian Drua, announced plans for an international 10s tournament scheduled for December 13, aiming to involve Skipper teams and enhance the competition’s profile.
