The Fijian Drua has officially signed Maleli Nauvasi, a standout player from the Vodafone Deans competition, to join the club’s Development program. The young center from Queen Victoria School played a pivotal role in his school’s triumph in the premier (U-18) title in 2024, earning the title of player of the match in the final against Nasinu Secondary School.

This signing is a reflection of the Fijian Drua’s renewed commitment to identifying promising local talent early and providing pathways for them to potentially secure a professional contract with the Super Rugby Pacific team. Nauvasi, hailing from Dratabu in Nadi, was also part of the Fiji Schoolboys U18 team that recently achieved victories over the Australia Schoolboys U18, scoring a try and contributing with an assist during that series.

Throughout his time at Queen Victoria School, Nauvasi represented the school in the Deans competition from U14 to U18 levels and showcased versatility by playing as a flyhalf, wing, and fullback.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Nauvasi said, “I’m really excited to be part of the Development program here at the Drua, especially staying close to my parents. I am very happy for this opportunity.” Ifereimi Rawaqa, the Fijian Drua Development and Skills Coach, commented on Nauvasi’s promising talent and discipline on the field, stating, “I’m delighted to welcome Maleli Nauvasi to our Drua Development program. He has shown exceptional promise, not only with his natural talent but also with his discipline on the field.”

Rawaqa expressed confidence in Nauvasi’s potential to make a significant impact in the future and emphasized the importance of training alongside elite athletes to prepare for high-level competition. He remarked, “We are excited to be part of his continued growth and journey in rugby.”

The Drua’s Development program aims to equip young players like Nauvasi with the necessary resources, coaching, and a high-performance environment to transition into professional rugby. Nauvasi now becomes part of a squad of 10 other young athletes, all receiving a development contract which includes a salary and the opportunity to train regularly with the Super Rugby Pacific team. Additionally, these development players will participate in the Skipper Cup for their provincial sides, complementing their experience in the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific league.
