Returning to their homeland has been a heartwarming experience for four members of the Kadavu Swire Shipping Fijian Drua men’s squad. Halfback Philip Baselala, Simione Kuruvoli, Kemu Valetini, and fullback Vuate Karawalevu are currently part of the Drua’s pre-season camp taking place in Namalata, Kadavu.
The team kicked off their training on Tuesday with their first session held at the grounds of Namalata Central School, following a traditional welcome ceremony. For Kuruvoli, 25, who hails from Nabouwalu, this return is about reconnecting with his family roots. He expressed the significance of the trip, noting, “We don’t come here often, especially the Western gang; for the Kadavu boys, it’s good to come and connect with the family and visit our people and villages.” He also mentioned that they have enjoyed the training and the opportunity to give back to the youth in the community.
Karawalevu, from Dravuwalu, echoed Kuruvoli’s sentiments, expressing joy that the pre-season camp was hosted in their home region. Baselala highlighted the importance of being on his home soil, emphasizing the team-bonding experience and the chance to showcase the beauty of his island, referred to as a hidden paradise.
During their stay, the Fijian Drua squad also engaged in pre-season training on the open sea at Namalata Bay, participating in a challenging boat race exercise, which attracted cheers from local villagers. Head coach Glen Jackson praised the experience, enjoying the combination of the boat trip, pleasant weather, and traditional kava ceremony.
The connection to their roots and community engagement not only strengthens team dynamics but also fosters a sense of belonging and pride. As the Drua men prepare to return on Friday, this unique experience is sure to resonate with them as they continue their training and build connections crucial for their upcoming season.
This heartwarming reunion with their roots can rejuvenate the players, enhancing their performance as they carry the spirit of their heritage onto the field.
