The four members of the Kadavu Swire Shipping Fijian Drua men’s squad—Philip Baselala, Simione Kuruvoli, Kemu Valetini, and Vuate Karawalevu—are experiencing a heartwarming return to their home turf. Currently attending a pre-season camp in Namalata, Kadavu, the team held their first practice session at the Namalata Central School grounds following a traditional welcome ceremony.
Simione Kuruvoli, 25, expressed the significance of this trip for reconnecting with his family roots. He emphasized the importance of coming back home, especially for those who usually reside in the Western parts of Fiji. According to Kuruvoli, it provides a special opportunity to connect with their families and engage with local communities, especially the youth.
Fullback Vuate Karawalevu echoed these sentiments, expressing gratitude that the pre-season camp was hosted in his homeland. He noted that it served as a fantastic getaway for those experiencing Kadavu for the very first time. Meanwhile, Philips Baselala shared his enthusiasm about training in his homeland, highlighting the bonding experience with his teammates and showcasing the island’s beauty.
The squad also took part in a vigorous boat race exercise in Namalata Bay, much to the delight of local villagers who came to watch and cheer them on. Head coach Glen Jackson noted the excellent weather and the enjoyable experience of participating in a traditional kava ceremony during their pre-season activities.
Nacani Cawanibuka, the Drua’s head of athletic performance, also has roots in Kadavu, adding to the camp’s personal significance. The Drua squad is set to return from this enriching experience tomorrow.
This touching return underscores the importance of cultural connections and community engagement in sports, showing how athletes can inspire young aspiring players back home through their journeys. It’s a wonderful reminder that professional sports extend beyond the game and into the heart of a community, fostering bonds through shared heritage.
