The four members of the Kadavu Swire Shipping Fijian Drua men’s squad are experiencing a heartwarming reunion with their roots as they participate in a pre-season camp on their home island of Kadavu. Halfback Philip Baselala, Simione Kuruvoli, Kemu Valetini, and fullback Vuate Karawalevu are enjoying the opportunity to connect with their families and the community during this special week.
Their journey began with a traditional welcome ceremony followed by their first training session at the Namalata Central School grounds. Kuruvoli, who comes from Nabouwalu in Ono, Kadavu, expressed the significance of this experience, noting the rarity of such visits, especially for players from the Western regions. He emphasized the importance of reconnecting with family and giving back to the local community, particularly the youth.
Karawalevu echoed Kuruvoli’s thoughts, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to hold their pre-season camp in Kadavu, which serves as a refreshing getaway for many team members. Baselala, from Solotavui, Nakasaleka, shared his joy at being back on his home soil, highlighting the chance for team bonding and showcasing the beauty of his island to his teammates.
As part of their training, the squad ventured into the open sea at Namalata Bay, participating in a challenging boat race with local villagers cheering them on. Head coach Glen Jackson remarked on the positive experience of the boat trip, the pleasant weather, and the traditional kava ceremony that accompanied it.
