The Fijian Drua has announced an exciting development regarding two of its academy players, Seremaia Salikoro and Sefanaia Naqama, who have both been awarded scholarships by the esteemed Tauranga Boys College in New Zealand. This opportunity is a result of a strategic partnership established between the Drua and the college.
Salikoro, a student at Natabua High School, has secured a three-year scholarship, while Naqama, from Sila Central High School in Nausori, has received a two-year scholarship. The players were recognized for their potential by Regan Ward, the First XV coach at Tauranga Boys College, and Senior Rugby Coordinator Aidan Kuka, who spent a week with the Drua and identified Salikoro and Naqama as ideal candidates for this opportunity.
Baden Stephenson, the general manager of the Fijian Drua, expressed his excitement about this partnership, stating, “The Fijian Drua are thrilled to commence our world-class partnership with Tauranga Boys College. The partnership will be a life-changing experience for our first two scholarship holders.” He highlighted that both 16-year-old players would receive an exceptional education, immerse themselves in a new culture, and participate in an elite rugby environment. Stephenson also assured that both players would return to the Drua after completing their scholarships, emphasizing the importance of their development in alignment with the values and commitment to nurturing good character both on and off the field.
As part of the Fijian Drua Academy, Salikoro and Naqama are anticipated to arrive in New Zealand before the next academic year begins. Aidan Kuka reiterated the excitement of partnering with the Drua to provide these players with an enriching educational and rugby experience. He noted that Tauranga Boys College is dedicated to excellence in developing boys into remarkable young men and looks forward to welcoming Seremaia and Sefanaia in 2025.
This initiative not only highlights the dedication of the Fijian Drua to developing young talent but also points towards a promising future for these young athletes as they expand their horizons within a supportive and well-regarded rugby program abroad.
Overall, this partnership represents a significant opportunity for young Fijian athletes to grow academically and athletically, fostering a positive and successful future.
