The four members of the Kadavu Swire Shipping Fijian Drua men’s squad are experiencing a heartwarming return to their home turf as part of their pre-season camp in Namalata, Kadavu. Halfback Philip Baselala, Simione Kuruvoli, Kemu Valetini, and fullback Vuate Karawalevu are showcasing their dedication to both sport and their community during this significant trip.
The team commenced their training at the Namalata Central School grounds after a traditional welcome ceremony. Kuruvoli, a 25-year-old from Nabouwalu, highlighted the importance of this visit, stating that it allows players to reconnect with their family roots, especially for those from the Western parts of Fiji. He expressed gratitude, saying, “We don’t come here often, especially the Western gang; for the Kadavu boys, it’s good to come and connect with family and visit our people and villages.”
Karawalevu echoed this sentiment, expressing his happiness about having the pre-season in Kadavu and appreciating the experience, especially for teammates visiting the island for the first time. Baselala, who hails from Solotavui in Nakasaleka, emphasized the significance of training on home soil, describing it as a perfect opportunity for team bonding while showcasing the natural beauty of his island.
Members of the Drua squad also engaged in a unique training exercise on the open sea at Namalata Bay, involving a boat race that drew cheers from local villagers, highlighting the support from the community. Head coach Glen Jackson remarked on the enriching experience provided by the boat trip, the pleasant weather, and the traditional kava ceremony.
The Drua squad’s commitment to maintaining strong community ties while preparing for their season reflects a positive model of sportsmanship, where athletes leverage their platform to inspire and uplift their local community. As they prepare to return, their experiences in Kadavu will likely strengthen both their team dynamics and their connection to their roots.
Overall, this journey symbolizes more than just sports; it serves as a powerful reminder of the significance of community and cultural identity in the world of athletics.
