Fans of the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua are beginning to recognize the talents of Issak Fines-Leleiwasa, a former Wallaby who demonstrated his skills during a recent pre-season match against the Chiefs. His adept control at the ruck and poise in attacks have piqued the interest of both fans and teammates alike, adding vital depth to the team’s competitive halfback lineup.
With an intense battle for the number nine jersey underway, Co-captain Frank Lomani emphasizes the importance of this competition as the team prepares for the upcoming Shop N Save Supermarket Super Rugby Pacific season. He remarked, “If there’s no competition, for us as a team, we won’t be able to play. But the competition is tight.”
Lomani highlighted the strengths of the players vying for the position, including Simione Kuruvoli, who had a commendable season last year, young talent Philip Baselala, and the experience that Fines-Leleiwasa brings from his time with the Western Force and the Wallabies. “We have Simi, who played all of last year, and Fines is here coming from Australia with Perth and the Wallabies. Phillip, it’s very tight, so only two will play, obviously,” Lomani noted.
As the selection process remains focused on performance, Lomani assures that every player is motivated to earn their spot in the match-day squad through impressive displays in training and games. “There’s a performance environment. Whoever performs on the weekend puts their hand up for selection, which is good for us individually and as a team as well,” he added.
The Fijian Drua are set to face the Skipper select side this Friday in their second pre-season game, which will kick off at 4 PM in Lautoka. Fans can catch the action live on FBC Sports, making it an exciting moment for supporters and players alike as they gear up for the new season.
