SWIRE Shipping Fijian Drua Head Coach Glen Jackson delivered an inspiring message to the 29 young athletes joining the club’s inaugural Fijian Drua Academy cohort during the launch event in Nadi. This program marks a significant milestone for Fijian rugby, as it brings together Under-16 players aiming to cultivate their skills both in rugby and in life.
Jackson emphasized the importance of character in addition to athletic ability, stating, “Rugby is obviously very important. Being at this club is all about being a better person.” He reassured the young players that their journey to becoming professional athletes would be supported by the entire Drua family, including coaches and medical staff. He described this year as crucial for both the Academy and the Drua’s growth in the Super Rugby competition, where the team has made impressive progress in just three years.
He encouraged the players to be proactive in their learning, urging them to ask questions and remain curious. “Too often, as Fijians, I know we’re very happy just to say nothing. If you don’t ask questions, boys, you’ll have regrets,” Jackson remarked.
Fijian Drua CEO Mark Evans outlined the Academy’s purpose: to identify and develop young talent nationwide, starting with the Under-16 category, creating a sustainable path to professional rugby through a cooperative scouting process involving Drua staff and experienced coaches.
The following 29 players make up the Academy squad from various schools across Fiji, showcasing the diversity and talent within the youth rugby community.
This initiative not only focuses on developing future rugby stars but also emphasizes personal growth, reflecting a holistic approach to nurturing young talents in the sport. The Fijian Drua Academy serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring athletes, demonstrating a commitment to fostering both sporting excellence and responsible adulthood.
Overall, this opportunity represents a bright future for Fijian rugby, as these young players prepare to embark on a journey that could one day lead them to the international stage.
