Fijian Drua Gears Up for Super Rugby 2025: Key Positions in Focus

The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua is gearing up for the 2025 Shop N Save Super Rugby competition with plans to assemble a formidable squad. Forwards coach Chris Gibbes has pinpointed the need to strengthen two key positions: No.6 and No.8.

Rather than adjusting current players, like Te Ahiwaru Cirikidaveta, for these roles, Gibbes is exploring alternative solutions. The team welcomed back experienced flanker Joseva Tamani, who previously played with the French club Colomiers. Tamani, known for his agility and ability to capitalize on loose balls, is expected to play a significant role in the upcoming season after impressively contributing to the Drua in the past.

In addition, young talent Isoa Tuwai, who has excelled with Suva Rugby, is also viewed as a valuable asset for these positions. Tuwai’s journey from inside centre to flanker showcases his versatility, a quality that Gibbes finds beneficial as players nowadays can often fill multiple roles.

The Drua team is focused on building on their recent achievements, having reached the Shop N Save Super Rugby quarterfinals for two consecutive years. Anticipation is high as they prepare to field a strong lineup at the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens event in Sigatoka from January 16-18 next year.

Several promising young athletes, including Isikeli Rabitu and Philip Baselala, are vying for spots on the Drua 7s team, as they participate in a competitive lineup featuring teams such as the Seattle Barbarians, Australian Select, and the All Blacks 7s.

As the team enjoys a brief respite with family and friends during the festive season, they look forward to returning to training with renewed determination for the challenges ahead.

Overall, the Fijian Drua’s commitment to developing their squad and integrating young talent sets the stage for a bright future. Fans can be hopeful that the team will build on their past successes and continue to make strides in the Rugby scene.
