The return to their home territory has been an emotional experience for four players from the Kadavu Swire Shipping Fijian Drua men’s squad. Halfback Philip Baselala, Simione Kuruvoli, Kemu Valetini, and fullback Vuate Karawalevu are currently engaged in a pre-season training camp at Namalata in Kadavu. Their first training session took place on Tuesday at the Namalata Central School grounds, which was preceded by a traditional welcome ceremony.
Kuruvoli, who is 25 years old and comes from Nabouwalu, Ono, Kadavu, expressed the significance of this trip to reconnect with his family. He noted, “It means a lot. We don’t come here often, especially the Western gang; for the Kadavu boys, it’s good to come and connect with family and visit our communities.” He also highlighted the positive impact of the training on local youth.
Karawalevu, from Dravuwalu, echoed these feelings, stating his gratitude for the opportunity to hold the pre-season camp in his hometown. Baselala, whose roots are in Solotavui, Nakasaleka, emphasized the joy of bonding with teammates amidst the beauty of his island, referring to it as a “hidden paradise.”
In a thrilling twist to their training, the squad took their preparations to the open sea for rigorous sessions at Namalata Bay. The villagers of Namalata and Namuana gathered to cheer them on during a challenging boat race exercise. Head coach Glen Jackson praised the experience, highlighting the beneficial boat trip, pleasant weather, and traditional kava ceremony.
Drua’s head of athletic performance, Nacani Cawanibuka, also shares roots in Kadavu. The players are set to return from this enriching retreat tomorrow.
This pre-season camp not only strengthens team dynamics but also fosters a deep sense of belonging and connection to cultural heritage. As the players train and engage with their community, it reflects a commitment to both personal growth and the development of local talent. This shared experience is a reminder that sports can be a powerful medium for fostering unity and pride in one’s roots, and offers a hopeful outlook for the team’s performance in the upcoming season.
