Swire Shipping Fijian Drua Development will take on Lautoka Rugby in the curtain-raiser to Round 6 of the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific this Saturday at Churchill Park Ground Three, kicking off at 12:30pm. The match, staged ahead of the Queensland Reds’ clash with the Fijian Drua, offers the development side another chance to blood players and sharpen combinations against strong local opposition.
Head coach Nemani Nadolo described the fixture as an important stepping stone for both senior squad players needing game time and younger prospects seeking match exposure. “It’s another great opportunity for our boys to have another run out — particularly our senior players — and a great opportunity for our development group to get some more minutes in the legs,” Nadolo said, adding that Lautoka have “been preparing well.” He also highlighted the match as a means to deepen ties with grassroots rugby and local communities.
Nadolo has made several adjustments to his matchday 23 to reflect those development aims. Nadroga captain Sakiusa Vosayaco returns to the starting line-up after missing last week’s fixture, bringing leadership and provincial experience to the backline. Iosefa Namoce, who made his main-squad debut last weekend, has been elevated into the starting role at outside centre, giving him a chance to build on that initial outing.
At flyhalf, Kemu Valetini has been handed kicking duties and will marshal play for the development side. Nadolo described Valetini as a reliable scorer off the tee, signalling trust in his composure in a role that will be pivotal to managing the game against a physical Lautoka pack.
There is positive news on the injury front with young hooker Moses Armstrong-Ravula named in the matchday squad at No.16 after recovering from injury. His inclusion provides depth at hooker and an opportunity to reintroduce him to competition rugby in a managed way. Loosehead Penaia Cakobau is named on the bench as cover in the front row, ensuring the side has experienced scrummaging options during the match.
The selection changes reflect a clear developmental focus: blend senior leadership and specialist kicking responsibility with game exposure for newly debuted and returning players. For Nadolo and his staff, the curtain-raiser serves both as preparation for potential elevation into the main Swire Shipping Fijian Drua roster and as a platform to test emerging combinations under match pressure.
The Lautoka fixture not only offers competitive rugby but also aims to bolster community engagement across the western province, as Nadolo underlined. Fans can catch the developmental clash at Churchill Park Ground Three from 12:30pm this Saturday ahead of the Reds–Drua Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific headline match.
